1 Choose relevant projects
Not every project in your portfolio is suitable for every job. You want to select the ones that match the company's goals, values, and needs. For example, if you are applying for a e-commerce website, you might want to highlight your projects that demonstrate your proficiency in user interface design, responsiveness, and accessibility. If you are applying for a data visualization platform, you might want to showcase your projects that use charts, graphs, and animations. Think about what skills and technologies the employer is looking for and tailor your portfolio accordingly.

Before the interview, select the projects you want to highlight based on the job requirements and the company's focus. Practice talking about each project concisely and confidently.Start by introducing yourself briefly and providing some context about your background and experience. Then, give an overview of your portfolio and the types of projects you've worked on.For each project, explain your role and contributions in detail. Discuss the problem you were solving, your approach to solving it, the technologies you used, and the outcomes achieved. Discuss your design and development process for each project, including any research, planning, prototyping, and testing you conducted.

It is crucial to thoroughly understand the specific needs of the position, whether it's a combination of design and development or a full-stack development role. Using filters on projects within your portfolio not only helps recruiters quickly identify relevant work but also showcases your attention to detail and specific skills. During the presentation, take the opportunity to highlight your coding skills by explaining aspects such as code readability and scalability. This not only demonstrates your technical expertise but also provides insight into your approach to problem-solving and coding best practices, making your portfolio presentation a comprehensive reflection of your suitability for the role.

I found it helpful to present a wide range of projects in my portfolio that go beyond the company's needs to highlight my flexibility and the will to adapt to different environments. However, it's important to show not just many different projects, but also different skills like user interfaces, data-heavy designs, or accessibility for handicapped users.

Presenting my portfolio always starts with a conversation with my potential client to learn what they have in mind and wish to achieve. I will show off my best work in the niche they are looking for - if it is applicable. Context is also very important - i try to discover as early as possible what the best outcome for my client would be and base my presentation around that goal.

2 Prepare a story for each project
Your portfolio is more than a collection of screenshots and links - it is a narrative of your development journey. For each project, you should be able to explain what the problem or goal was, your role and contribution, the tools and technologies used and why, the challenges faced and how they were overcome, as well as what you learned and how you improved. Answering these questions will showcase your problem-solving skills, communication skills, and passion for learning. It will also help you prepare for potential questions from the interviewer.

The background story is very important as it comes with my skills to communicate with stakeholders and to make decisions alone, with others, or to turn decisions into a design. The story can also explain the reason why a feature or a design has changed. It can also transport information about changing needs or requirements also explain the obstacles I have faced and how I solved it.

3 Create a presentation format
Depending on the interview format, you might have different ways to present your portfolio. You should prepare a presentation that is easy to navigate, clear, and engaging. For example, you could use a slide deck to summarize each project with key points, images, and links. Alternatively, you could create a website with interactive elements and animations. You could also make a video with voice-over and captions. It's important to test your presentation format beforehand to ensure it runs without glitches.

4 Practice your presentation
Once you have your portfolio ready, you should practice your presentation. To do so, time yourself and aim for 10-15 minutes for the whole portfolio. Additionally, record yourself and watch for your tone, pace, and body language. It may also be helpful to ask a friend or a mentor to review your portfolio and provide constructive criticism. By doing this, you can improve your delivery, identify your strengths and weaknesses, and reduce nervousness when speaking about your projects. Furthermore, you should be prepared to answer questions and receive feedback. Practicing your presentation is an important step in ensuring success.

Planning is an important part of presenting portfolio step by step. You could make a list of questions which might be asked and prepare them, The one thing is that things might go wrong. It might not go how you planned, but it's all about learning from failures and accepting feedback and using them for improvement.

Don't lie on your portfolio. Add only information which highlights the real you and you are confident upon. Experienced persons could easily notice who is trying to fake them.
