1 What is the 80/20 rule?
The 80/20 rule, also known as the Pareto principle, states that 80% of the results come from 20% of the efforts. In SMO, this means that you should focus on the 20% of the content, platforms, and strategies that generate the most value for your audience and your goals. By doing this, you can save time, money, and resources, and improve your performance and results.

The 80/20 rule can provide a valuable guideline, it's not a strict rule, and the specific ratios may vary based on your industry, audience, and goals. The key is to identify the areas where you're getting the most value and allocate your resources accordingly to maximize your social media optimization efforts.

2 How to identify the 20% of your SMO?
The 80/20 rule can be optimized with SMO by measuring and analyzing your social media metrics and KPIs. These indicators reveal how well your content is performing on each platform, and if it is meeting your objectives. Reach, impressions, engagement, traffic, and conversions are common examples of what should be tracked. Google Analytics, Facebook Insights, Twitter Analytics, and other tools can be used to measure these metrics and KPIs. Additionally, segmenting them by platform, content type, campaign, audience, and time period provides further insights.

Optimizing the 20% of your SMO is important, but you should not neglect the other 80% of your content, platforms, and strategies. To leverage them, consider repurposing and recycling content across different platforms and formats, curating and sharing relevant content from other sources, collaborating and partnering with other brands or influencers, using paid ads to amplify reach, and monitoring and analyzing competitors. These tactics could be beneficial in providing new angles, perspectives, or updates to your content; adding commentary or insight to content from other sources; creating co-branded or co-created content; exposing your content to new or targeted audiences; and learning from industry trends or customer feedback.
