5 Things to Know About the Maurices Credit Card - NerdWallet (2024)

MORE LIKE THISCredit Cards

In some ways, the Maurices Credit Card — issued by Comenity Bank — reflects the clothing store that it’s affiliated with: approachable and stripped down of unnecessary frills. The card, along with the store's loyalty program, is relatively straightforward. And that's a refreshing change of pace from some other store credit cards with earning potential tied to complicated rewards programs.

Maurices Credit Card holders enjoy extra discounts on every Maurices purchase made in-store or online, but there are a few downsides to be aware of, too.

Here are five things to know about the Maurices Credit Card.

» MORE: Best store credit cards

1. It can only be used at Maurices

Maurices sells a wide range of basic apparel in nearly 900 retail stores across the U.S. and Canada. In addition to clothes in sizes 0-24, the retailer offers swimwear, undergarments, sleepwear, shoes and accessories. As of 2022, Maurices also sells clothes for girls ages 8-12 through its new brand, Evsie.

While the store offers a variety of clothing, there's only one option for using its credit card. The Maurices Credit Card can only be used at Maurices stores, making it a "closed-loop" card.

🤓Nerdy Tip

Some store credit cards can only be used with that store brand, but other store cards, known as "open-loop," can be used most anywhere credit cards are accepted. Open-loop cards bear both the name of the store and the payment network, like Visa or Mastercard.

2. The card has two sign-up bonuses

Most credit cards come with a welcome bonus, but new Maurices cardholders are treated to two. First, you’ll receive a 15% discount off of your first purchase if you pay with the Maurices Credit Card on the same day that you open it.

Plus, new cardholders receive 100 bonus points in the mymaurices loyalty program (enrollment is automatic when you open a Maurices Credit Card). 100 points is equal to a $5 reward certificate that can be used toward a future Maurices order.

While two bonuses sounds nice, the 15% savings won't amount to much unless you spend hundreds of dollars on your first purchase. A basic cash-back card like the Wells Fargo Active Cash® Card, by comparison, offers this: Earn a $200 cash rewards bonus after spending $500 in purchases in the first 3 months.

3. You can earn double points, but watch their expiration

In general, cardholders earn 1 point for every $1 spent on the card. But there's a regular opportunity to earn 2 points per $1 spent on double points days, which occur every month.

Points are automatically converted to reward certificates once you hit the 100 point-threshold. 100 points is equal to a $5 reward certificate, making every 1 point worth 5 cents.

On the surface, that sounds like a great value. And, compared to some store cards and to the industry standard of 1 cent per point from many cash-back and travel cards, it is. But there's a big caveat: Those points can only be redeemed at Maurices, and they will expire.

Points earned from Maurices purchases expire if there is no account activity in your mymaurices account for 12 months, and reward certificates are only valid for 90 days after they’re issued. Since rewards certificates are issued automatically for each 100 points you earn, you can't save up certificates slowly to use for one large future purchase.

Many general credit cards earn points that do not expire as long as the account is in good standing, such as Citi ThankYou Points or American Express Membership Rewards.

4. You'll save 10% on every purchase, plus get other perks

Every time you use the Maurices Credit Card, you’ll get 10% off of the total, including on sale and clearance items. According to the retailer, the discount is applied automatically at checkout, in-person or online, whenever you use the card to pay.

Maurices Credit Card holders also receive free shipping on online orders with no minimum spending requirement. Cardholders get special access to sales, plus a $10 coupon on their birthday.

5. You won't want to carry a balance

It's common for store credit cards to come with high APRs, and the Maurices Credit Card is no exception. As of this writing, the card carries a sky-high interest of 29.9%. That means for every $100 balance carried on the card, you'll pay nearly $30 in interest fees.
