Is private equity a tough job?
Private equity professionals work long hours and are highly competitive and must think critically, and have a passion for financial investing deals, not just following the markets. Other requirements to start a career in private equity are: Excellent grades and a notable transcript in school.
In private equity, you'll also be responsible for a lot of different tasks. The deal teams are lean and your decisions will have a high degree of permanence, which is why I'd say the stress level is overall higher in private equity than in banking. Very importantly, there's also no one around to check your work.
For a student looking to break into one of the top 10 PE firms, your chance is 1 in 300 or 0.33%. To break into one of the top 10 hedge fund firms, your chance is 1 in 147 or 0.68%.
Private equity firms have been grappling with higher borrowing costs, economic uncertainty and sluggish fundraising. And as they've been slow to return capital to pension funds and other key investors, once-reliable clients are maxed out on the cash they're willing to allocate to such investments.
And even if there is a path, advancement can be challenging because Partners rarely get “burned out” and leave. You could end up doing a lot of cold calling, research, or portfolio company monitoring rather than deal execution – and even if you do work on deals, you'll be lucky to close ~1 major transaction per year.
You usually get into the office around 9am and may leave between 7pm-9pm depending on what you're working on. You may work some weekends (or part of a weekend) depending on if you are on an active deal, but on average, weekends are your own personal time.
The “all-in” combined salary is approximately $275k to $390k at top PE firms, but this figure can be much lower for smaller-sized funds and exceed $400k for firms with reputations for being the highest-paying (e.g. Apollo Global).
Any profits over and above 10% shall be split between the General Partner & Limited Partner using a ratio of 20% for the General Partner and the remaining 80% for the Limited Partner.
As for hours, both private equity and investment banking can be demanding careers. However, investment bankers tend to work longer hours, often working late into the night and on weekends. Private equity firms also tend to have a more relaxed work environment and offer more flexible hours.
"Two" means 2% of assets under management (AUM), and refers to the annual management fee charged by the hedge fund for managing assets. "Twenty" refers to the standard performance or incentive fee of 20% of profits made by the fund above a certain predefined benchmark.
Is private equity ruthless?
It's no secret that private equity firms have a bad reputation. They're often seen as ruthless vultures that swoop in to buy up struggling companies, slash costs, and then sell them off for a profit.
Working at a Private Equity Firm
The private equity business attracts some of the best in corporate America, including top performers from Fortune 500 companies and elite management consulting firms.
Private equity fees are very high
Simply put, the less you pay in fees and charges, the more you keep for yourself, and, generally speaking, the higher your eventual returns will be. The importance of controlling your costs applies just as much to investing in private companies as it does to investing in public ones.
Private Equity Associate Lifestyle and Hours
At many smaller funds and middle-market funds, you can expect to work 60-70 hours per week, mostly on weekdays, with occasional weekend work when deals heat up.
Private equity firms buy companies. Then, they operate and try to improve those companies. Finally, they try to sell these companies at a profit. Private equity employees are compensated for making good investment decisions.
Private-equity firms typically run leaner operations than banks and so have less need to cut jobs during slowdowns. But some have laid off about 5% to 15% of their staff, said Sasha Jensen, founder and chief executive of Jensen Partners, an executive-search firm for alternative-asset managers.
And if you don't stay to see the long-term results of your deals over many years, you won't receive the benefits of carry. The bottom line is that yes, the pay ceiling is higher in private equity, and there are MDs and Partners who earn many times – sometimes hundreds of times – what MDs in banking earn.
PE firms do not simply sit back and observe the management of companies they invest in. Rather, they actively participate in management and work to implement enhanced strategies that add value, drive growth and improve financial performance.
Here are some reasons why private equity is popular as a career: High Earning Potential: Private equity professionals often enjoy high earning potential. Compensation structures in the industry typically include a base salary and performance-based incentives, such as carried interest or profit-sharing.
The minimum investment in private equity funds is typically $25 million, although it sometimes can be as low as $250,000. Investors should plan to hold their private equity investment for at least 10 years.
How do private equity partners get paid?
On the “Uses side,” private equity salaries and bonuses are straightforward. These are cash payments made each month during the year (base salaries), with one lump-sum payment at the end of the year (the bonus). Management fees and deal fees tend to pay for base salaries since these fees are fixed.
The Rule of 72 is a convenient method to estimate the approximate time for invested capital to double in value. By merely taking the number 72 and dividing it by the rate of return (or interest rate) expected to be earned, the output is the approximate number of years for an investment to double.
PE is all about deployment of capital via valuation of target companies, and return optimization based on the PE firm objectives. If you are the models person, the valuations person or the treasury person with multiple currencies exposures then a lot of math.
With this power, however, comes greater accountability, as they're more deeply involved as company shareholders. This can lead to greater stress in private equity than in consulting firms.
Private equity firms usually seek someone with a strong sense of numbers. As such, the majors they generally look for include Finance, Accounting, Statistics, Mathematics, or Economics. GPA will, of course, be a factor here.
