How long is a typical VC fund?
Venture capital funds typically have long tenures, beginning the first closing and running for 8-10 years. Fund managers usually seek pre-determined extension periods (2-3 years for example) to allow them for a smooth exit from all investments.
Most venture funds have a 10 year time horizon to invest all of their capital and then return the profits to the fund's investors. There are exceptions to this 10 year life cycle, but that is fairly standard.
The topline: The optimal venture fund size is $200 million to $350 million, according to Santé's new analysis. These funds are able to generate higher returns via typical exits.
Holding Periods
After the investment period, VCs enter the holding period, shifting their focus from making new investments to supporting and managing the fund's existing portfolio companies. This phase typically spans 5–7 years and frequently overlaps with fundraising for a new fund.
Venture funds typically aim to return capital to investors within 10 years, although disbursem*nts can begin as early as year five or six. In the first 2-3 years, the fund manager generally focuses on investing and growing the portfolio. An exit can be an IPO, an acquisition, a liquidation event, or a SPAC merger.
The average venture capital firm receives more than 1,000 proposals per year. Approximately 30% of startups with venture backing end up failing.
Minimum investment amounts in VC funds vary widely, depending on the fund's size, strategy, and target investor base. They typically range from a few hundred thousand to several million dollars.
VCs often use the shorthand phrase “two and twenty” to refer to the 2% of annual management fees a venture fund might take and the 20% carried interest (or “performance fee”) it would charge.
The median venture fund raised in 2023 in the U.S. jumped to $37.4 million, up 44% from the median of $26 million in 2022, according to the latest PitchBook-NVCA Venture Monitor report. That median size is at a high for the past decade.
Almost 7 percent of VCs in the sample — 825 out of 12,195 — had founded a venture-capital-funded startup. Nearly 30 percent of these startups were successful, while about 12 percent were unsuccessful.
What is a typical VC fund return?
They expect a return of between 25% and 35% per year over the lifetime of the investment. Because these investments represent such a tiny part of the institutional investors' portfolios, venture capitalists have a lot of latitude.
Top VCs are typically looking to return 3-5X+ on their entire fund to their LP investors over ~10 years. For this, they need multiple 'fund mover' outcomes in each fund, since many early-stage investments will eventually fail or return only a small % of the fund.
In venture capital, a “close” or “closing” happens when a fund has legally secured commitments from Limited Partners (LPs) for a target portion of the intended total fund size. These commitments represent pledges from LPs to contribute specific amounts of capital to the fund.
The sharks are venture capitalists, meaning they are "self-made" millionaires and billionaires seeking lucrative business investment opportunities. While they are paid cast members of the show, they do rely on their own wealth in order to invest in the entrepreneurs' products and services.
Setting up a fund may vary depending on the stage the fund wants to invest in, the sector or industry, and the performance objectives for its portfolio companies. Full-time GPs typically require between $20 MM and $40 MM per head in fund size to cover salaries and expenses, assuming a 2% management fee.
Venture capital is a high-risk, high-reward type of investment, and there is no guarantee of success. While VC firms aim to identify the best opportunities and minimize risk, investing in startups and early-stage companies is inherently risky, and there is always the potential for loss of capital.
One reason is that the startup may have a great product or service, but it doesn't have a viable business model. This means that the company isn't generating enough revenue to sustain itself or that it isn't profitable. Another reason why startups fail is that they burn through their funding too quickly.
The slow final quarter put 2023 on record as the lowest total for venture funding since 2018, Crunchbase said. Specifically, global startup investment in 2023 reached just $285 billion, marking a 38% decline year over year, down from the $462 billion invested in 2022.
If you haven't already made some good investments — it's going to be tough to start your own fund. Go work at a fund first and make some good investments there. Assuming you have at least a partial track record, then, there are two-and-a-half basic paths on how to start a venture capital firm.
Most larger VC firms ($250m-$2b fund size) want to own 20% of each investment. They'll even often pay a higher price to get that ownership, if need be. Your existing investors will want to do some or all of their pro rata, especially if a good Series A investor comes in.
How much do VC usually invest?
In conclusion, VC firms typically invest anywhere from a few thousand to a few million dollars into a startup. The amount of money invested is usually based on the stage of the startup, the amount of dilution the VC firm is willing to accept, and the perceived risk of the startup.
But it's important to understand how the math works here — and how it figures into how much to raise. My simple advice when you raise capital: assume you have to return a liquidity event (sale or IPO) of at least 10x the amount you raise for raising venture capital to be worth it. Valuations change from round to round.
In investing, the 80-20 rule generally holds that 20% of the holdings in a portfolio are responsible for 80% of the portfolio's growth. On the flip side, 20% of a portfolio's holdings could be responsible for 80% of its losses.
Length of Vesting Schedule: the most common way for founder shares to vest is over time – the period of time is open for negotiation, but we typically see 3 to 4 years.
More than half of all venture capital funding flows to just two states: California (40.2%) and New York (12.3%). But on a relative basis, Massachusetts leads the nation with $32,800 in VC funding per $1 million in state GDP.
