If left empty, wild grass plants will randomly grow out of them, provided the box is placed on the surface or in Space.[1] The plant in a Planter Box cannot be cut in the regular manner, e.g. via nearby swinging tools. Can confirm that gravestones that bounce onto the planter boxes will break the plants and seed. I left my computer on to grow mushroom grass, came back and a goblin army massacred me a bunch of times. My planters were right underneath spawn so some of them got destroyed by the gravestones.
