Short Round Won An Oscar? Where The Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom Cast Are Today. (2024)

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom features an excellent cast of talented actors, and many of the film’s most memorable faces went on to have very successful careers after the success of this project. Temple of Doom is the second entry in the Indiana Jones franchise, following the titular protagonist as he attempts to retrieve an ancient stone that’s been stolen from a village in India by a High Priest and his followers. Just like Raiders of the Lost Ark, the movie sees Jones embark on several dangerous adventures and thrilling chases in his pursuit of this treasure.

The Indiana Jones movies are among the most popular and influential of their genre. They were majorly responsible for the boost of blockbuster adventure movies throughout the ‘80s and ‘90s, with Temple of Doom, in particular, pushing the series to bolder, more dynamic heights. While it isn’t as widely beloved or critically acclaimed as Raiders of the Lost Ark, the second installment did introduce some memorable and dynamic characters. They were played by a talented cast, who have since gone on to star in several memorable and award-winning projects.

There are some actors that are always associated with certain characters, and thanks to the success of this classic franchise, Harrison Ford quickly reached this status with Indiana Jones. The character is an eccentric professor of archeology who uses his talents in the field to hunt down precious relics and keep them away from the wrong hands. Ford has returned to this role several times throughout his career, though his other notable roles include Han Solo in the Star Wars franchise, Rick Deckard in Blade Runner and Blade Runner 2049, and even Thaddeus Ross in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Although Willie Scott remains Kate Capshaw’s most iconic and memorable role, the actor has still found success in her acting career since appearing in the Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom cast. Following her breakout performance, Capshaw landed roles such as Laurie in Just Cause and Joyce in Black Rain. After marrying Steven Spielberg, with the pair beginning the relationship shortly after working together on the Indiana Jones set, the couple eventually went on to have seven children together. Capshaw may have retired from acting in 2002 but she’s still a prolific name in the movie industry.

After stealing the show as Indy’s young sidekick Short Round in The Temple of Doom, Ke Huy Quan followed up his success by starring as Data in Richard Donner’s The Goonies. It was a hugely beloved role that seemed to pave the way for Quan’s future career, but the actor sadly struggled to find work afterward. He starred opposite Brendan Fraser in Encino Man in 1992, but his big return didn’t come until 2022’s Everything Everywhere All At Once. In that absurdist comedy, Quan stole the show as Waymond Wong and even won an Academy Award in recognition of his talent.

Joining the Indiana Jones and theTemple of Doom cast is Roshan Seth, who played the role of Chattar Lal, the Prime Minister to the Maharaja. He’s a major character in the film, and his inclusion in the story was a great way of bringing this different culture to life. Seth’s role in the movie led to him landing parts in A Passage To India and Street Fighter in the following years, though he was sadly unable to capture the same level of success. The actor made a small comeback with Tim Burton’s live-action remake of Dumbo, where he played Pramesh Singh.

Dan Aykroyd (Weber) - Found fame with Ghostbusters

Despite his role being very small, Dan Aykroyd is one of the biggest stars in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom cast. He plays Art Weber, who comes to Indy’s rescue when he’s captured by enemy forces. 1984 was a huge year for Aykroyd, with Temple of Doom releasing mere weeks before Ghostbusters, the project for which he’s gathered the most fame over the years. Throughout the ‘90s, the comedian went on to star in projects such as Coneheads and Nothing But Trouble, but he’s since announced that he won’t be actively pursuing his acting career as much anymore (via Evening Standard).

David Yip (Wu Han) - No longer acting

Wu Han was a friend of Indy’s who assists him throughout The Temple of Doom, with the story frequently hinting at a rich and personal backstory between the pair. Yip brings this character to life with his charming performance, and while he doesn’t get that much screen time, it often feels like there’s more to the character than what’s shown. Though Temple of Doom is Spielberg’s least favorite of the trilogy, it’s minor characters like Han that make the story feel layered. After joining the Indiana Jones and Temple of Doom cast, Yip starred in A View To A Kill and Kenneth Branagh’s Hamlet, before focusing on his personal life.

Ric Young (Kao Kan) - Acting and directing

Ric Young has described the character of Kao Kan as a “smartass, tough gangster's son” who’s incredibly animated and dynamic in his rivalry with Indy. The actor made his on-screen debut in The Inn of the Sixth Happiness alongside Ingrid Bergman, before the success of Temple of Doom opened several more doors for him. Young later landed roles in The Last Emperor, Chain of Command, and even Oliver Stone’s Nixon. The last noteworthy entry in his filmography was the 2007 short film Oh Vey, which he also wrote and directed.

The movie opens with a long sequence in Shanghai, where Chau Kah Joo’s character Chen turns on Indy and his friends during a deadly battle. The actor brought his martial arts capabilities to the role, using the skills that he’d learned in real life during his extensive training. After joining the Indiana Jones and theTemple of Doom, he continued learning and teaching the arts in Singapore alongside his dancing career. The film’s decision to include real martial artists is among the many reasons the action works so well.
