Gold Eagle Coin Design

The obverse features the well known likeness of Lady Liberty sculpted byAugustus Saint-Gaudensfor the $20 Double Eagle that was minted from 1907 until 1933.

Liberty is walking forwardwith rays of the sun risingbehind her on the horizon. In one hand, she holds an olive branch that is extended as an offering of peace. Inher other hand, she holds a torch that is symbolic of guiding people towards the light of enlightenment, liberty and freedom.

The outer edge of the coin is encircled with fifty stars representing each of the states. The word"LIBERTY" is inscribed along the top edge.

The reverse engravings include the words "United States of America", "E Pluribus Unum" which is latin for "from many, one". Additional inscriptions include "In God We Trust", the coin's weight (one oz fine gold) and legal tender face value ($50 USD).

There have been several design updates or changes throughout the life of this series.

  • Date Numerals: From 1986 through 1991 the date were shown in Roman Numerals. In 1992, a change was made to use the familiarArabic numerals.
  • Reverse Changes: Up until 2021the reverseof the coinfeatures a family of eagles.The male is depicted as returning to the nest with an olive branch grasped in his talons.The Type 2 reverse design was introduced mid-year in 2021. It features a close up portrait of the face and head of a bald eagle.
