What is the hardest part of pediatrics? ›

Finally, the most common and difficult challenge that many pediatricians face is seeing young children sick and suffering, especially if they lose a child. It is very difficult and upsetting to see a family and a child suffer. Nothing can prepare these pediatricians for this challenge.

Children's health is not just a smaller version of adult health. Children's bodies function much differently than adult bodies do through the many stages of growth and maturity. Pediatricians are also more familiar with special needs children, premature babies, and childhood illnesses.

The reasons for the lower compensation are simple economics: Pediatricians are not reimbursed by private and public insurance at the same level as adult providers and other specialists for similar services.

In 2022, 55% of pediatricians reported experiencing burnout, and a staggering 48% said they did not feel valued. Those statistics came from more than 13,000 physicians and nonphysician providers who participated in the AMA's Organizational Biopsy^®.

The top stressors for these pediatricians include completing or catching up on work at home, documenting patient information in the electronic health record (EHR) and completing nonclinical tasks and regulatory requirements such as continuing medical education and maintenance of certification (see figure).

The findings, published March 23 in Pediatrics, show that more than 80% of new pediatricians are very satisfied with their post-residency jobs and how those positions matched with their future plans, career goals and lifestyle.
