'Big Brother 20' recap: A new HoH emerges in a post-Kaitlyn world (2024)

Kaitlyn might be gone after suffering from a disastrous case of puzzle-related stress disorder, but when one storm passes, another always seems to be waiting around the corner on Big Brother. And with a new HoH to be named, everyone is on their toes this Sunday.

In the wake of Kaitlyn’s epic fail last week, the house has mixed emotions about the way she went out — but they all see it as an opportunity to solidify their place in the game. First, everyone wants to know who delivered the vote to evict Rockstar. When Haleigh asks Faysal if he was the one, he denies it. JC, the person who actually threw the hinky vote in hopes of spreading paranoia ahead of the HoH competition, asks Tyler if he was the one. Tyler makes it clear that despite his closeness to Kaitlyn, he did indeed vote her out. However, a new person of interest emerges from both Level (Insert Number Here) and Bayleigh: Scottie. JC points out his frantic attitude after the eviction, while Bayleigh reminds the house that Scottie voted out Swaggy C when he was a member of their alliance. JC’s efforts to throw the house off his direction seems to be working so far.

The Head of Household competition/newest attraction at your nearby state fair, “Perfect Timing,” sees the houseguests slide through “the information superhighway” via an e-mail board; however, this is less about being fast than it is being right on time. Whoever passes their “e-mail” through the inbox in exactly 8 seconds (or as close to it as possible) is the new HoH. Bayleigh, the first competitor to play, wins HoH right off the bat with a time of 8:08. This comes at the perfect time for her and her alliance with Faysal, Haleigh, and Rockstar. Scottie is confident he’s safe with Bayleigh as HoH, while Brett and Rachel are immediately concerned about their futures in the game.

Bayleigh immediately sets out to uncover the truth, but not before a celebratory dance party with her alliance in the storage room. First, se meets with Tyler, who sets himself up as a downtrodden lone-wolf in the wake of Kaitlyn’s eviction. Bayleigh falls hook, line, and sinker with his act, and the two make a plan to work together this week. The duo could make for an interesting team if it all works out; they’re both savvy social players who know when to cut their losses.

Meanwhile, Faysal and JC are getting along, teaming up for wacky adventures with puzzles and sunscreen and night-vision footage! Still better than 9JKL, in my eyes. Also better than 9JKL is Bayleigh, as she continues hunting for the mysterious vote flipper. Dead-set on Brett as one of her nominees, she meets with Scottie in the HoH room to share her suspicions and challenge him over his Swaggy C vote from week 2. Ultimately he reasserts his allegiance to her, and she decides she’s got bigger fish to fry — but not before telling him to calm down and behave less suspiciously.

Bayleigh then meets with JC, promising him his immediate safety in exchange for her future safety. While the two share a dicey history, she says he’s not a target. JC expresses his anxiety about being a pawn to Faysal (mid-nosebleed?), calling himself one of the most liked people in the house. Faysal then visits Bayleigh and tells her that putting up JC would not be ideal, arguing that he’s been more loyal than Rachel or Angela. Bayleigh is annoyed by the conversation, finding Faysal’s sudden loyalty to JC confusing. Later, she and Haleigh meet with Faysal to clear the air as to where he truly stands. Things begin to get heated when Haleigh questions his loyalty to their alliance in the wake of the JC campaigning and the Kaitlyn drama from last week. Ultimately, Bayleigh lays down the law and reminds him that this is her HoH and she’ll be making her own decisions.

As the nomination ceremony approaches, Bayleigh remains undecided about whom she’ll put next to Brett, her ideal target this week. She meets with Rachel to fill her in on her plan, saying that Brett has to go because she can’t count on his loyalty. Bayleigh ultimately asks Rachel if she would be willing to go up next to him as a pawn. Bayleigh, in an effort to assure Rachel’s she not her target, decides to tell her about her App Store power. While this revelation is well-intentioned, it could easily backfire as Rachel appears to be a ride-or-die with Level Six. When nomination time approaches, she puts up Rachel and Brett for eviction, but Bayleigh makes it clear in the diary room afterwards that things could change following the veto — meaning JC and Scottie still aren’t out of the woods. We’ll have to wait until Wednesday to see if anything actually changes, but Bayleigh is clearly out to make her mark as HoH so watch out!
